Industrial Sodium Sulphide: Uses, Safe Storage & Handling Guide

Industrial sodium sulphide (Na₂S, often called "soda ash of the sulphide industry") is Shenhong's second major product after sodium sulphate anhydrous, and one of the most versatile industrial chemicals. There is one key difference between the two: SSA is mild and stable, while sodium sulphide is a corrosive hazardous chemical that releases hydrogen sulphide (the "rotten egg" smell) when exposed to moisture. So beyond quality and price, safe storage and safe handling are must-know topics for every buyer. This article covers both.

1. Main Uses

1.1 Dye Manufacturing (largest end use) Sodium sulphide is the core raw material for sulphur dyes — sulphur black and sulphur blue are all synthesised from it. This is exactly Shenhong's production chain: we make sodium sulphide and further process it into finished sulphur black, using the same raw material and the same process system, giving customers more stable quality and more reliable supply.

1.2 Leather Tanning In the beamhouse stage, sodium sulphide is the most widely used unhairing agent. It dissolves the hair root quickly and strips the hide efficiently at low cost, and remains the mainstream choice for tanneries.

1.3 Ore Flotation / Mining In the flotation of non-ferrous metals such as copper, lead, zinc and molybdenum, sodium sulphide acts as a depressant and activator that adjusts pulp potential, suppresses gangue minerals and raises concentrate grade and recovery. Mining plants usually purchase in stable, scheduled batches.

1.4 Paper Making Sulphate (kraft) pulping requires sodium sulphide in the cooking liquor to maintain the sodium-sulphur balance in the recovery cycle, often used together with SSA.

1.5 Chemical Raw Material Sodium sulphide is used to produce sodium thiosulphate, sulphur dyes and polysulphides. At Shenhong, SSA is converted into sodium sulphide, and sodium sulphide is further converted into sodium thiosulphate and sulphur black on the same integrated production line — giving full traceability of quality at every stage.

1.6 Water Treatment & Environmental Protection Sodium sulphide precipitates heavy metal ions (copper, zinc, nickel) from wastewater, making it an important reagent for smelters and electroplating plants.

1.7 Other Applications Metal surface treatment (descaling, activation), electroplating and some textile processes also use sodium sulphide.

2. Safe Storage (key section)

Sodium sulphide is classified as a corrosive substance. Follow these storage rules:

  • Keep it sealed and dry — top priority: sodium sulphide deliquesces easily. Moisture not only causes caking and quality loss but also slowly releases hydrogen sulphide. Reseal bags tightly after use; seal bulk material immediately after warehousing.
  • Storage environment: store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from direct sunlight, heat and ignition sources. Keep humidity low and use moisture-proof pallets on the floor.
  • Segregation: NEVER store with acids (acid + sodium sulphide instantly releases toxic hydrogen sulphide). Keep away from oxidisers, flammables and food materials.
  • Packaging: typically 25 kg / 50 kg woven bags with inner plastic lining, or jumbo bags for bulk. Replace damaged bags promptly to prevent leakage.
  • Inventory control: store in a dedicated area with clear "corrosive" warning labels, keep access controlled, and maintain receiving/issuing records in line with hazardous chemical regulations.
  • Personal protection: workers should wear dust masks or respirators, protective gloves and goggles; the warehouse should be equipped with eyewash stations and emergency rinse facilities.

3. Emergency Response

  • Spill: cover small spills with dry sand and collect, never flush with water (water intensifies the reaction and spreads corrosion). For large spills, evacuate first, then respond per your emergency plan.
  • Skin contact: remove contaminated clothing immediately and rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes; seek medical attention promptly.
  • Eye contact: flush with running water or an eyewash station for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
  • Inhalation of hydrogen sulphide: move the person to fresh air immediately, keep the airway open, and seek oxygen/medical help if symptoms persist.
  • Fire: use dry sand or dry powder; avoid large amounts of water to prevent corrosive solution from spreading.

4. Buying Advice

  • Grade: common industrial grades are 60%, 62% and above (per GB/T10500-2009). Choose by process requirement; higher content usually means more consistent quality.
  • Appearance: flake, granular or lump form, colour from light yellow to reddish brown. Uniform colour and minimal caking are good signs.
  • Supplier qualification: choose a licensed manufacturer with secure raw material supply (ideally captive resources), batch test reports and MSDS provided with every shipment.
  • Supply capability: for high-volume buyers in dyeing, mining and tanning, sign long-term agreements with producers who have stable capacity and reliable logistics to avoid shortages and quality fluctuation.
