Applications of Sodium Sulphate Anhydrous: 9 Key Industries Explained

2026-09-01

Sodium sulphate anhydrous (SSA, Na₂SO₄) is often called the "industrial multi-tool": it is inexpensive by itself, yet plays a vital role in regulating reactions, cutting costs and improving processes across many industries. In our previous article we explained what SSA is and how to buy it. This article looks at the applications — understanding where and how your customers use SSA helps you choose the right grade and negotiate the right price.

1. Paper Making (one of the largest end uses)

In the kraft (sulphate) pulping process, SSA is a key makeup chemical for the cooking liquor. The chemical recovery loop continuously loses sodium and sulphur; adding SSA replenishes the sodium-sulphur balance, keeps the recovery cycle stable and improves pulp yield. Large paper mills are steady, high-volume consumers, usually feeding by jumbo bags or bulk, with strict requirements on content and moisture.

2. Textile Dyeing

SSA is one of the most widely consumed inorganic salts in textile dyeing. In reactive and direct dyeing, it acts as an exhausting/leveling agent that drives dyes evenly onto the fibre, improving dye uptake and colour brilliance. Dyeing mills purchase frequently and in large volumes, making them core customers for SSA producers.

3. Synthetic Detergents

In powder detergents, SSA is used as a filler that improves powder flow, prevents caking and lowers production cost. In some formulations SSA accounts for 20%-40% of the total weight — a genuinely large and stable market.

4. Glass Manufacturing

SSA serves as a fining and fluxing agent in glass melting: it helps remove bubbles from the melt and lowers the melting temperature, saving energy and improving glass quality. Flat-glass and container-glass manufacturers are important users, with strict demands on whiteness and impurities.

5. Mineral Processing

In ore flotation, SSA is used as a modifier/depressant that improves flotation efficiency, raising concentrate grade and recovery. Mining operations usually purchase in stable, scheduled batches.

6. Leather Tanning

SSA is used in tanning as a filler and dehydration agent that improves leather texture and workability. Individual tanneries may use less than paper or textile mills, but industry-wide demand is steady.

7. Chemical Raw Material (closely tied to Shenhong's own production chain)

SSA is a raw material for many chemicals, including sodium sulphide, sodium silicate (water glass) and potassium sulphate (Mannheim process). For example, industrial sodium sulphide is produced by reducing SSA with carbon at high temperature — which is exactly why Shenhong produces both SSA and downstream products such as sodium sulphide, sodium thiosulphate and sulphur black. Being on the same production chain, we understand our customers' process requirements and quality pain points first-hand, and can deliver more consistent supply and quality control.

8. Pharmaceuticals & Fine Chemicals

Pharmaceutical-grade SSA is used as an excipient and buffer; food-grade SSA appears in certain food processing steps. These grades have strict purity and heavy-metal limits and command higher prices than industrial grade, usually purchased under certified quality systems.

9. Other Applications

SSA is also widely used in cement grinding aids, building anti-freeze agents, animal feed additives and soil improvement. From heavy industry to light industry, SSA is everywhere.

Buying Advice

  • For industrial use, focus on Na₂SO₄ content and moisture: ≥99% (GB/T6009-2014 Class I, Grade 1) is the mainstream choice for paper, dyeing and detergent industries;
  • For glass, pharmaceutical and food grades, additionally check whiteness, impurities and heavy metals;
  • For large, long-term buyers, choose a producer with captive mine resources, sufficient capacity and batch test reports — this is the foundation of stable supply and controllable cost.

Sichuan Shenhong Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. owns 3 mirabilite mines with about 500 million tons of reserves and an annual SSA capacity of 300,000 tons. Our products meet GB/T6009-2014 Class I Grade 1 standard. We also produce sodium sulphide, sodium thiosulphate, sulphur black and sodium tripolyphosphate, exporting to more than 30 countries across Europe, America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
